“Why Hope (i)” is a reflection of the past; of the 80’s. It is a reminder of red herrings that divert society’s attention – going nuclear free – but at the same time building facilities that spy on societies for our own and other nation’s nefarious ends.

“Why Hope (i)” links a past red herring with the present red herring highlighted by the ‘flag referendum’ which was launched not long after the Inspector-general of Intelligence and security will investigate complaints over the alleged interception of communications of New Zealanders working or travelling in the South Pacific by the Government Security Communications Bureau. The mass surveillance documents were released by whistleblower, Edward Snowden.

For my next project, I am endeavouring to investigate that the 1980’s was a foundation decade to our present time. Exploring economic, political and security foundations introduced in the 80’s – Laissez-faire economics, Waihopai, Wanganui Computer, Rainbow Warrior and the Trade hall bombings, and such things as the Springboks tour and other events formed how we live our lives now.

This exploration has a possible parallel theme – a parallel self-portrait; as the 80’s are formative to here now, the 80’s could also be seen as formative to who I am now.
